On The Anniversary of my Dad’s Passing and Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene Boone Valle Crucis North Carolina

Today is the one-year anniversary of both my dad’s funeral and the day Hurricane Helene passed through the area of Boone, North Carolina where we live. Dad’s graveside service a year ago ended at about 11:00 am in Winamac, IN. Mom and I dropped my sister Anne off at the airport in Indianapolis, and then we started what should have been an eight-hour drive home. The drive ended up taking us 36 hours, and we spent much of the night driving around the mountains of North Carolina trying to find a passable way to our house. I have been writing about the last weeks of dad’s life, his passing, and the drive mom and I made together that day. Given that over 100 lives were lost in North Carolina and so many people lost their homes, I’m sure this is a difficult time for many in the area. I said a prayer today for all those who were impacted by the storm and my thoughts are with you.
